How it works: three steps
- Upload one photo of your bathroom. Phone photos work fine.
- See it remodeled: walk-in tub, new tub or walk-in shower in your actual room, with real products and prices.
- Decide who comes over. If you want quotes, we connect you with one trusted bath pro near you in Cleveland. One pro, not a call list.
The bathroom is the most dangerous room in the house for older adults; the CDC attributes a large share of senior fall injuries to bathing and transfers. The good news is that bathroom risk responds to cheap fixes faster than almost any other home hazard. This guide goes from $30 solutions to full renovations, with the honest version of who pays for what.
Start under $500: the highest-value fixes
- Grab bars, properly anchored: $30 to $80 each plus install. One vertical at the tub entry, one horizontal on the long wall, one near the toilet. Anchor into studs or use rated hollow-wall anchors. Towel bars are not grab bars.
- Handheld shower with slide bar: $40 to $150. Lets you bathe seated and rinse without turning.
- Non-slip surface: $15 to $50. Textured strips or a quality mat inside, a secured rug outside.
- Transfer bench or shower chair: $40 to $150. The single biggest risk reduction for tub bathing while you plan a bigger fix.
- Raised toilet seat or comfort-height toilet: $35 to $400.
- Lighting and nightlights: under $50. Most bathroom falls involve a night trip.
A handy Cleveland pro can install the whole list in a morning. Every item stays useful even if you later remodel.

The bigger projects
| Project | Typical installed range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tub cut (step-through opening in existing tub) | under $1,500 | Half-day job, permanent, fastest big fix |
| Tub-to-shower conversion, low threshold | $4,000 to $12,000 | The standard aging-in-place project |
| Barrier-free roll-in shower | $8,000 to $18,000 | Wheelchair and walker friendly, subfloor work |
| Walk-in tub installed | $5,000 to $15,000 | For bathers; see the dedicated cost guide |
| Full accessible bath remodel | $15,000 to $35,000+ | Widened door, fixtures, flooring, lighting |
Typical 2026 Northeast Ohio ranges, compiled from the cost guides cited across this site. Not quotes.
Choosing between them is mostly about how you bathe. Shower people should convert to a low-threshold shower with a seat. Bath people who want hydrotherapy should read the walk-in tub guide and the cost breakdown first.
Who pays: the honest version
Medicare
Original Medicare generally does not pay for walk-in tubs, shower conversions or grab bars, because it classifies them as home modifications rather than durable medical equipment. See Medicare.gov on bathroom safety equipment. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer limited supplemental home-safety benefits such as grab bar installation; check your specific plan documents, not a salesperson’s summary.
Ohio Medicaid
For eligible Ohioans, Medicaid waiver programs such as PASSPORT and MyCare Ohio can fund environmental accessibility modifications, including bathroom changes, when they keep someone safely at home. Eligibility is income and needs based. Start with the Ohio Department of Aging or the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging, which serves Cuyahoga and surrounding counties.
Veterans
The VA’s disability housing grants, including HISA grants for home improvements and structural alterations, can fund bathroom accessibility work for qualifying veterans. HISA can apply even for some non-service-connected conditions. Apply through VA, not through a contractor who promises to handle it.
County and local help
Cuyahoga County has operated low-interest home repair loan programs for owner-occupied homes, and the CHN Housing Partners network administers repair assistance in the Cleveland area. Programs change; call before you plan around one.
The rule that protects you: any salesperson who implies Medicare routinely pays for walk-in tubs is telling you something Medicare itself says is not true. Walk away from that pitch.

Frequently asked questions
Does Medicare pay for grab bars or walk-in tubs?
Original Medicare generally does not. Some Medicare Advantage plans include limited home-safety benefits. Verify in your plan documents; do not rely on a sales pitch.
What is the single best cheap safety upgrade?
Properly anchored grab bars plus a transfer bench, together usually under $300 installed. They address entry, exit and seated bathing, the three highest-risk moments.
Can Ohio Medicaid help pay for a bathroom modification?
For eligible members, waiver programs like PASSPORT can fund environmental accessibility modifications. Contact the Ohio Department of Aging or the Western Reserve Area Agency on Aging to be assessed.
What VA help exists for bathroom safety?
VA disability housing grants, including HISA, fund home improvements for qualifying veterans, sometimes including non-service-connected conditions. Apply directly through VA.gov.
Walk-in tub or walk-in shower for aging in place?
Match the fix to how you bathe. Daily shower takers are usually safer and happier with a low-threshold shower and seat; dedicated bathers get real benefit from a walk-in tub.
See it first. Then decide who comes over.
Every big bath company in Northeast Ohio sells the same way: a discount, financing, and a free in-home consultation where the real price finally appears after a two-hour visit. The visits are real and sometimes worth it. But you should not need a salesperson on your couch to find out what your own bathroom could look like. See the preview and the typical prices first. Then invite someone over on your terms.
