How it works: three steps

  1. Upload one photo of your bathroom. Phone photos work fine.
  2. See it remodeled: walk-in tub, new tub or walk-in shower in your actual room, with real products and prices.
  3. Decide who comes over. If you want quotes, we connect you with one trusted bath pro near you in Cleveland. One pro, not a call list.

Most Cleveland bathtubs that need replacing are 60 inch alcove tubs, and a huge share of them are original cast iron or steel units from when the house was built. Here is what swapping one actually involves, what it costs in 2026, and the liner shortcut the big franchises would rather sell you.

Your three real options

1. Reglazing or refinishing: $300 to $1,000

If your tub is structurally sound but stained, chipped or the wrong color, refinishing sprays a new coating over the existing surface. It is the cheapest path and done well it buys 5 to 10 years. It does not fix cracks, soft spots or drain problems, and a second refinish rarely holds as well as the first.

2. Tub liner or shell: $1,500 to $5,000

A custom acrylic shell measured and molded to fit over your existing tub and walls. This is the signature product of several national franchises because it installs in a day with no demolition. It is legitimate for a sound tub. Know the tradeoffs: the liner slightly shrinks the bathing well, water trapped between liner and tub can cause odor or flex if installed poorly, and you are entirely dependent on install quality. Ask how the liner is sealed at the drain and overflow.

3. Full tub replacement: $3,000 to $8,000

The old tub comes out, a new acrylic, fiberglass, steel or cast iron tub goes in, usually with a new wall surround. This is the right call if the tub is cracked, the walls behind it are suspect, or you want to change the layout. In Cleveland’s pre-war housing stock, removing a 300 pound cast iron tub often means breaking it in place with a sledge, which is loud, adds labor, and is completely normal. Budget extra if your bathroom is on the second floor of a Lakewood or Cleveland Heights colonial with a narrow staircase.

What drives your price up or down

  • What is behind the walls. Pre-1960 homes across Cleveland, Parma and Euclid often hide galvanized pipe, old drum traps, or water damage. A good installer prices a contingency; a great one shows you photos before charging for it.
  • Subfloor condition. Decades of splash around an original tub can rot the subfloor. Fixing it mid-job runs a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars.
  • Tub material. Acrylic is light and warm; enameled steel is cheap but loud; new cast iron is beautiful, heavy and expensive to get upstairs.
  • Walls. A tub swap almost always disturbs the surround. Acrylic panels are the budget path, tile is the premium path.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a bathtub replacement take?

A straight swap with an acrylic surround is commonly one to two days. Tile walls add several days for waterproofing and setting. Liner systems are typically one day.

Is a tub liner a ripoff?

No, but it is a specific product for a specific case: a structurally sound tub you want to stop looking at. If the tub or walls are compromised, a liner covers a problem instead of fixing it.

Can I replace a tub myself in Ohio?

Homeowners can do their own work in most Ohio jurisdictions, but tub drain and supply changes may need a plumbing permit, and DIY cast iron removal is genuinely hazardous. Most people hire it out.

Should I keep at least one tub in the house?

Real estate agents commonly advise keeping one tub for resale if you may sell to families with small children. If it is your forever home, build for how you actually bathe.

What tub brands will I see in quotes?

Common spec brands in Northeast Ohio include American Standard, Kohler, Sterling, Bootz and Delta, plus each franchise’s house-branded acrylic. The preview tool shows real retail products with prices.

See it first. Then decide who comes over.

Every big bath company in Northeast Ohio sells the same way: a discount, financing, and a free in-home consultation where the real price finally appears after a two-hour visit. The visits are real and sometimes worth it. But you should not need a salesperson on your couch to find out what your own bathroom could look like. See the preview and the typical prices first. Then invite someone over on your terms.
